St. Francis Dam Disaster Month Proclamation

The Santa Clarita City Council issued the following proclamation March 13, 2018:

CITY OF SANTA CLARITA
PROCLAMATION
ST. FRANCIS DAM DISASTER COMMEMORATION MONTH
MARCH 2018

WHEREAS, on March 12, 1928, the St. Francis Dam, located north of Saugus in Los Angeles County, breached at 11:57 pm and 30 seconds and during the morning hours of March 13, flooded through the Los Angeles County and Ventura County communities in the Santa Clara River; and

WHEREAS, the flood waters raged through the flood plain, resulting in the loss of 431 lives, destruction of residential, business and agricultural property, and loss of livelihood; and

WHEREAS, this disaster is the 2nd largest disaster as far as loss of life in California, being surpassed only by the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and fire; and

WHEREAS, it is right and just to pay homage to those who were killed, injured, maimed, dislocated and/or who lost family members, their possessions, their livelihood; and

WHEREAS, it is important to educate the public about this historical event; and

NOW THEREFORE, the Santa Clarita City Council proclaims March 2018, as "St. Francis Dam Disaster Commemoration Month."
