July 14, 2013 — Grave marker for Chief Frances Garcia Cooke (April 17, 1883 [source] - July 19, 1946) and husband Frederick S. "Fred" Cooke (March 28, 1881 - 1958) in the Ruiz-Perea Cemetery in San Francisquito Canyon.

The Cookes are an old native American family (part Tataviam) from the Acton and Castaic areas. Fred and Frances are parents to many children, among them Lyda Manriquez, Mary Cooke and Cy Cooke. They are grandparents to Cy's son, Charlie Cooke and great-grandparents (via Mary) to Ted Garcia Jr.

Fred and Frances are the only Cookes who are known to be buried in the Ruiz-Perea Cemetery. It's possible that some of Fred's ancestors may be buried in family plots in the Castaic area, including the one which, until 1998, was located on William W. Jenkins' Lazy Z Ranch, overlooking the modern-day Stonegate community. (Mr.) Dolores Cooke was working for Jenkins when the former was killed in 1890 by William Chormicle. Although none of the remains could be positiviely identified, archaeologists who examined the bodies exhumed from the Jenkins plot in 1998 believed at least some of them were Jenkins' ranch hands.
