            Strata: Layers or sections of deposited material such as rocks or alluvial sands. These layers are what
            give the formations their “layer cake” appearance.








































               Another example of the forces of erosion on the varying strata of the sandstone. Note the smoothed appearance
               of the layers which have been worn by millions of years of factors like rain and wind. Photograph by Sarah
