H
istoric signs will be preserved now that the Santa Clarita City Council approved an amendment to the city's sign ordinance May 22.
The 1990 sign ordinance regulates the size, number and location of all business signs in the city except existing billboards. City Planning Manager Vince Bertoni said that under the new variance, specific criteria will have to be met and approved by the planning director before a sign can be designated as historic. Among the criteria: The sign is 50 years or older, reflects special elements of the city's history, or embodies distinguishing architectural characteristics of a style, type, period or method of construction.
The City Council asked the city planning staff to modify the ordinance after several community members testified in previous meetings that changing certain signs throughout the valley would alter historical landmarks, such as the Saugus Cafe.
Bertoni said the Saugus Cafe sign did not originally qualify for the historic status because it is attached to the roof. The new amendment is designed to protect historic signs that may be a marquee, painted or roof signs, which are not otherwise allowed.
The new amendment also lifts regulations from historic markers and plaques on businesses. An SCV Historical Society committee is working on plans to install markers on historic buildings.
