ierra Vista Junior High students and faculty are working on the second edition of the Santa Clarita Valley history book which will span from 1926 to 1976 and are in need of photos from the 1950s, '60s and '70s.
"We know a lot of people lived here then," said Philip Scorza, the Sierra Vista Junior High School English teacher who worked along with history teacher Frank Wright and a small group of interested students on the first edition of the book as well.
"Santa Clarita Valley: A Pictorial History, 1876-1926," was published last summer and can be purchased from local bookstores, the SCV Historical Society and The Signal office, among other locations.
For the second volume, Scorza encourages people to look through their photos of friends and relatives that might contain local landmarks in the background. Aerial photos are welcome as well.
"We need pictures of Canyon Country from the '60s on, and Saugus as well," Scorza said.
The second volume will contain stories and photos including the St. Francis Dam disaster of 1928; Buffalo Tom Vernon and the Great Train Robbery; William S. Hart; development of Valencia; local schools; the opening of Magic Mountain; construction of Interstate 5 and more.
Scorza and Wright's students volunteer their time to assist in layout, writing captions and general book production. Students working on the upcoming volume include Ashley Leming, Ashley Pera, Amanda Fusco, Denise Bajgrowicz, Makayla Stevens, Melissa Spackman, Kenia Morales, Tiffany Moore, Carrie Paul and Jessica McDonald.
Persons interested in contributing can either donate the photos which will ultimately end up at the SCV Historical Society, or loan the photos for reproduction in the book. To contribute photos call the historical society at 254-1275 or send e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
