SAVE THE DATE: RUTH NEWHALL TRIBUTE

A special evening to celebrate the life of Ruth Newhall will be held at the Saugus Train Station on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004. Longtime owner-editor of The Signal newspaper and the inspiration behind the founding of the SCV Historical Society, Mrs. Newhall died at Berkeley, Calif., on Nov. 24. Biographical information, as well as several local histories written by this remarkable lady, can be found in the SCV History Archives at scvhistory.com.

THE FIRES ARE OUT

The Santa Clarita Valley was extremely lucky in the October fires that destroyed more than 2,000 homes and killed 26 people across the Southland. No homes or lives in the SCV were lost. The biggest threat locally was to Mentryville. Thanks to the amazing efforts of fire fighters from several different agencies, Mentryville's homes escaped the inferno that blasted through the historic ghost town. For stories about the fire visit mentryville.org and follow the link.
