Motes & Theodosia Corralejo
Farm Workers

[MIKE CORRALEJO INDEX]

Motes (Motea?) and Theodosia Corralejo had nine children and worked the farms in the first quarter of the 20th Century, picking apricots and citrus fruits and other produce items from the Santa Clara River Valley in Ventura County to Fresno in the San Joaquin Valley. A son, Miguel "Mike" Corralejo, remembers that beans were harvested in the Santa Clarita Valley in the 1910s and '20s. When Mike was 14, in 1927, his father Motes died in a car crash near Fillmore. The family was living in Moorpark at the time. Motes had survived the Mexican Revolution of the 1908-1912 period, fleeing the regime of dictator Porfidio Diaz and escaping to Texas, where he found work on the railroad and made his way to California, initially settling in Whitter. He remarried following the illness and death of his first wife; Theodosia, Mike's mother, was Motes' second wife.
