December 19, 1970 — A snowball fight in Newhall was unusual enough that it made news across the Midwest and South — in some instances, front-page news (example below).

Original Associated Press wirephoto, 8x10 inches, from an unidentified newspaper archive. Cutline (see archival scan) reads:

(LA3) LOS ANGELES, Dec. 19 — IN THE GOOD OLD WINTERTIME — Children in Newhall 30 miles north of Los Angeles take advantage of a rare opportunity to frolic in the snow today. The strange fluffy white stuff fell at low elevations during the night as a chilly winter storm swept through southern California. (AP Wirephoto) (rhs71340tms) 1970

The next time it snowed in Newhall and Valencia (and lower Saugus elevations) was January 3-4, 1974.
