SANTA CLARITA VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
minutes of board meeting of October 21,1996
Meeting cal1ed to order at 7:07 p.m. by President Carol Rock. Quorum present- c-attached sign-
in sheet.
RECORDING SECRETARY - Corrections from minutes of September 23, 1996.
Olde Towne Days - add "outstanding sponsorhip" to treasurer's report on OTD.
Add the word "Ghostathon" to Murder Mystery of Nov 1, 1996.
Add that in the year 2000 will be a symposium of the California Conference of Historical
Societies.
Bob Lynds moved that the minutes be approved as corrected. Second. MOTION PASSED
CORRESPONDENCE - Letters to and from the Society include a letter from Ruth Newhall and
a letter to the City from the Society nominating Tom Frew for the Newhall Revitalization
committee.
TREASURER'S REPORT - Glen handed out report to board members. Bob Lynds motioned
to filed treasurer's report for audit. seconded.
MOGUL ENGINE 1629 - A letter was received by all board members from Mike Vitale. In
attendance to discuss the engine were Ruth Newhall, Donna Chesebrough, Leslie Besiding (?)
and Norm Harris. Norm handed board members a lengthy report stating the history and the goal
of the engine restoration committee. Lengthy discussion and questions followed by board
members.
Donna Chesebrough, a member of the family of the major donor, suggested that the train be
protected from the elements and a bottom line on costs for restoration.
Board members questioned: insurance, EIR, future monies, oak trees, right of way, Hart Park,
enough volunteers, traveling distance, AQMD/boiler, liability, cost of surveying tracks, updated
plans (plans are 10 years old).
A committee chaired by Glen Rollins, met and came back with the recommendation to tum
engine into a static display.
Phil Scorza motioned that the steering committee on engine have three months to answer
questions brought up from board members. Tom Frew seconded.
Discussion - Engine restoration committee would like more time, maybe 6 months.
Andree Walper called for the question. Motion amended. Restoration on engine be stopped so
that the restoration committee may have time to work on answers to be brought back to the
board in 90 days. Seconded. MOTION PASSED
NOMINATING COMMITTEE - Seven prospective board member names have been solicated
by nominating committee. Two new board members have been added to the roster to replace
those that have resigned: Cathy Martin to replace Cynthia Neal-Harris and Carl Kanowsky to
replace Gary Choppe.
