ESTIMATED COSTS
1. INSURANCE Hartford Boiler Insurance (includes
inspections during course of restoration; meets requirements for
C~>l.ifornia State steam boiler certification). Minimum $400-500
during restoration; average cost when operating $700-800.
· - General Liability Insurance $1,500-3,500 to
cover both the locomotive operating in the Park and the liability
and fire insurance for all of our buildings.
- Estimates given by Mike Deeble of HMBD
Insurance in Long Beach. (He specializes in insuring railroads and
historical societies around the country). [Mike noted that the
insurance premiums are very.expensive when you go on the main line
and need to have a $10,000,000 liabiity policy to cover grade
crossings.]
2. RESTORATION - Dixon Boiler Works has quoted $20,000 for
a welded front tube sheet and $26,000 for a rivited front tube
sheet. Installing the tubes was quoted at $15,000. Following Bob
Chesebrough's suggestion to take it to the shop there would be a
savings on labor costs by eliminating travel time and difficulties
in working in the field. ($500-1000 to truck to LA).
Boring out of the main cylinders was
estimated at $1,000.
We need to collect more information on the exact costs.
However the boiler is the most expensive item. We have already
completed more than $50,000 in cash investments plus more than
another $50,000 worth of volunteer labor.
3. LAY TRACK - The Los Angeles County Park Dept. chief
planner indicated that we can get a waiver from an EIR. Our
engineer, Don Hale, said that we do not need a grading permit since
we would be doing less that+/- 3 feet of grading. Rail and ties
have been offered as a donation by MetroLink.
